National Park Service Headquarters Building
Anchorage, Alaska

Pursuant to a contract award by GSA to JL Properties for office space, RIM designed the new 5-story office facility that now houses the National Park Service.

Our design combines a stone panel with a recessed fenestrations façade, and a cantilevered glass and spandrel glass façade on the north and south sides. The second floor is raised to 14 feet above grade for additional ceiling height. Openness to the street is enhanced by extensive use of glass at the ground level. A stone finished mechanical penthouse is set back in the middle of the building and softened in form by a curved roof assembly. The front or north face of the building is enhanced by a soft curve to the northeast corner. The curve creates an attractive faceting of the glazing and softens the form of the building. Colors for the exterior façade include Limestone glazing and Aqua glass and spandrel.

This building was designed and built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (LEED) Silver standards, a new energy efficient and environmental rating system established by the United States Green Building Council. There are many criteria for designing an energy efficient and environmentally-conscious building. In this structure, we have incorporated numerous “reduce-reuse-recycle” strategies including: motion activated lighting systems, high reflective ceiling tiles, and low water consuming toilet fixtures; workstations have been located on perimeter walls to take advantage of the natural sunlight and views. Low VOC paints and carpets have been installed, carbon dioxide monitoring systems have been calibrated and separate ventilations systems in copy rooms have been designed to improve indoor air quality. There are also large quantities of materials containing recycled content and rapidly renewable resources such as wood composite wainscots, bamboo paneling, cork, recycled rubber flooring, and acoustical ceiling tiles.

Design began in mid-July 2002. Construction was completed and occupancy occurred in mid-July 2003.
